Pixton is a website that allows users to create and share their very own comics--"Create your own cartoons with fully posable characters & animals! Upload pictures, create freestyle panel layouts, add sound & voice-over, and much more!"

Let's take a look and see what Pixton can do for classrooms!

Strengths:

  • Very easy & quick to use; basically just drag and drop
  • Allows you to be as creative as you'd like with your school work or lessons
  • Students or teachers can comment or rate comics
  • You can embed, download, post, or print your comics to share with others
  • Allows for a private and secure space
  • Teachers can use this as an assessment or grading tool
  • Offers a voice-over option to enhance learning
  • Very credible program--winner of numerous awards
  • Works in all modern browsers
  • Can use on interactive whiteboards

Weaknesses:

  • Free trial for teachers for 30 days, then you have to pay for the program
  • Some features are only applicable to the Advanced Comic Maker
  • Would have to upgrade to Pixton+ (which is not the free version) to access many features, such as: Advanced Comic Maker, Upload pictures & photos, Make unlimited comics, Print & download, Create contests, Team comics, Super long & freestyle comics, Super profile page

Communication:

Students can work individually or collaboratively to create unique comics. Students are also given the opportunity to publish, share, or remix their comics for sharing purposes. Comics can be posted to Edmodo or embedded to blogs or webpages.

Inquiry:

During the inquiry process, students are learning and finding things out. This tool allows students to express their knowledge in many ways. Students can explain and show what they know in a comic and use the voice-over to enhance their learning.

Construction:

Students will use the information from the inquiry process to create an original comic. During the construction aspect, students will understand the purpose of their work, share their work, and create a permanent piece that demonstrates their understanding of a particular concept.

Expression:

The students’ comics are their forms of expression. Students can be as creative as they choose. From picking the characters, backgrounds, colors, and styles, the opportunities are endless, and having the chance to publish and share their work with others adds to their motivation.
